Who is CTO?

I worked as a technical director in many businesses of different sizes. From startup companies with few employees, to international corporations with tens of branches around the World.

So you can call me the Serial CTO :)

CTO Goals

Company structures are different, business processes are different, people and culture are even more different... The goals for CTO are always the same:

Ensure guaranteed fulfillment of all business tasks using only available human and financial resources.

That is, in short, in one phrase.

What the CTO is actually doing?

The first task for any Technical Director is to select technologies and to build processes that will cover all the necessary business tasks.

The difference lies in the details and limitations:

  • Time limits.
  • Limited funding.
  • Availability of human resources.
  • Competition in a business niche.
  • The balance between tactical and strategic objectives.

The next big task for the CTO is the creation and development of the technical team.

Why the technical team is important?

The technical team maintains the operability of the technological system, guarantee the fulfillment of business tasks with the proper quality on time.

Depending on the maturity of the business, the balance between tactical and strategic objectives may change. In this case, making changes into the system without stopping work processes is provided by the technical team.

Software product in less than 1 hour!

There were about 3 hours of free time before visit to the cinema. So, just for fun, I've decided to measure the speed of my work. Also I was planning to record a screencast movie "how to make software products" :)

Unfortunately CamStudio recorder sucks for high resolution screen, so there is no movie :( But in less than 1 hour I've finished following tasks:

  • Purchase domain for new site and setup Wordpress there
  • Create Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts for new software
  • Make a copy of Caps Lock Indicator software for Scroll Lock key
  • Setup trial protection routines
  • Build installation package and upload it to the website

Not bad, isn't it? ;)

So, here it is: Scroll Lock Indicator software for Windows.

Back to Shareware :)

I have never ever planned back to shareware business, but one of my technical tasks requests testing of modern software protection and integration with billing services. So I've decided to make a small utility and push it to all required tests.

I have many ideas and feature requests form users of free Keyboard LEDs software, so there was no problem with idea of new software. So, here it is: Caps Lock Indicator

Who you gonna call? Kaspersky!

Many of us have seen Kaspersky Lab's promo video "Packin' The K!"
I think it's funny, but also quite stupid! As I understand, Kaspersky wants to populate his (or her :) own name in North America. Everybody knows Symantec and MacAfee, but who's the fuckin' Kaspersky? Making a funny, but unique video is not enough. It will only catch people who already know about Kaspersky. So what's the point? If I was marketing Kaspersky for money, I'd use a cover version of a popular tale or movie. You know, one of those where the hero is changed to Kaspersky himself or to some virtual antivirus hero! Imagine, Batman-Kaspersky on the antivirus-mobile drives to the computer virus nest and saves the World from a new epidemy :) But, I think Batman is to stupid too :) Moreover, using of such a popular title would cost too much! As I see it, the best tale for Kaspersly lab is Ghostbusters movie! Viruses and trojans are greatly associated with ghosts. The popular music theme "Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters" is a match for "Who you gonna call? Kaspersky" or "Who you gonna use? Kaspersky". Kaspersky Lab may create a cover version of this music clip, and it catches everybody!
Also, there are many other marketing possibilities to use Ghostbusters materials to populate Kaspersky name as an antivirus buster. Hope Natalia or Eugene will use this marketing strategy, so I'm waiting for my beer :)

AdSense rulez :)

I've earned $1,293.23 on AdSense in October 2007. $864.12 comes from special keyword targeted pages, like ape format or remote desktop I will investigate why some keywords generate lots of money. It seems that advertisers don't make any analysis and spend own budgets just for fun :)

AdSense unplanned income

I don't have "make for adsense" (MFA) sites. I'm using google advertising as additional targeted content. But in September 2007 adsenses earn $915 USD for me! Interesting statistic. Maybe I should look at adsense business model more closely.
